The Rural Cemetery

Jun 05, 2025 @ 5:30pm

Join guide Scott Haefner for a tour exploring the rural cemetery movement of the mid-19th century.

The rural cemetery movement began with the creation of Pere Lachaise in Paris and spread to the United States with the opening of the first “garden cemetery,” Mount Auburn, as an alternative to the overcrowded and often unkempt older burial grounds of previous centuries. Other municipalities followed suit with their own rural cemeteries, including Vale which was established in 1857.
The tour will take approximately 2 hours. Tours are $10 per person and free for children under 12 and members of Vale Cemetery Preservation, Inc.. The tour will start at the Caretaker’s Cottage at 907 State Street.

Tours, unless otherwise noted, start at 2 p.m. from the Caretaker's Cottage adjacent to the main entrance on State Street.

There is ample parking available and due to the size of the cemetery/park a shuttle bus is used. There is a $10 donation requested with children under 12 free.
